Arizona Proposition 206 – Paid Sick Time

az_minimumwage_121916

Beginning tomorrow, July 1, 2017, Arizona workers accrue and have the legal right to use a minimum amount of Paid Sick Time benefits each year. This is a part of Proposition 206, also known as the Fair Wages and Healthy Families Act,  that initially amended the Arizona Minimum Wage Act to provide for incremental increases to minimum wage for Arizona workers beginning on January 1, 2017.

What does this mean for employers?

The Act requires that Employers with more than 15 employees provide a minimum of 40 (annually accrued) hours of Sick Leave to employees.  However, the Fair Wages and Healthy Families Act (the “Act”) provides that “an employer with a paid leave policy . . . who makes available an amount of paid leave sufficient to meet the accrual requirements of this section that may be used for the same purposes and under the same conditions as earned paid sick time under this article is not required to provide additional paid sick time.” Therefore, provided that an employer’s equivalent paid leave policy provides paid leave that may be used for the same purposes and under the same conditions enumerated in the Act, it need not offer additional leave when an employee utilizes the available time for purposes other than those enumerated in the Act.

You can find more information about this Act at the following address:  https://www.azica.gov/frequently-asked-questions-about-wage-and-earned-paid-sick-time-laws.

Understanding Healthcare Terminology

health_insurance

A substantial proportion of individuals in the United States struggle with understanding the constantly evolving healthcare landscape. In fact, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, 77% of adults have basic or below basic health literacy, with only 12% of adults having proficient healthcare literacy. Healthcare literacy spans the scope of not only understanding healthcare but also an understanding of medical terms, how the body works, how to make healthcare decisions and more.

As more and more employers are working with millennial workforces, it’s important for employers to understand their role in helping employees understand their benefit packages being offered so employees are armed with all the information needed to make the best decision for them and their families. According to Transamerica Center for Health Studies’ (TCHS) executive director Hector De La Torre, many millennials don’t understand how health insurance works. A recent TCHS survey found that feeling uninformed about options is the biggest barrier to health insurance for uninsured Millennials, contributing to 11 percent going without.

InfinityHR developed a Healthcare Glossary for employers to use in their internal communications, on their employee portals and during open enrollment time to help bridge the gap between proficiency around making informed health insurance decisions.
